Our Commission as Catholics: "Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. " Matthew 28:19-20
To be a sponsor means to be a faith companion for a candidate on his/her faith journey. A sponsor is a member of the parish who represents the faith community of Holy Spirit Parish.
The short term committment is for the duration of the participant's presence in the RCIA process (usually 8-9 months); attendance at weekly RCIA sessions; attendance at RCIA Retreats; attendance at scheduled Masses with the participant; participation in all relevant Liturgical Rites and regular personal contact with the participant.
The long-term committment involves regular contact, especially during the new Catholic's first year and periodically thereafter.
Qualities of a Good Sponsor:
An ordinary Catholic who is a fully initiated and active parishioner in good standing; a person who is in touch with his/her own faith story; one who has a love for Christ and His Church; one who has a basic understanding of the Church's teachings; evidence of a lived faith in one's personal life; a mature understanding of the meaning of "servant" and "service"; punctual and flexible; good communication and listening skills; ability to keep confidentiality
What the Church asks of a Sponsor:
Commit to daily prayer for the person you are serving; become familiar with the stages of RCIA; attend weekly RCIA sessions; maintain personal contact between gatherings; attend RCIA retreats, relevant liturgical rites and rehersals as needed; assist pastor and other RCIA leaders with discernment of a participant's readiness; offer spititual support and work to draw the person into the life of the parish; follow-up if the person misses a RCIA session and/or take copies of materials discussed to them; attend Sunday Mass with the participant and stand with them before the altar of God; and strive to love them as Jesus would.
